Two guests, two radically different ideas. One shared question: what should packaging really be?

In a recent discussion on the Good Garbage Podcast, guest Dr. Alexey Vishtal explained that sustainability depends not only on intentions but also on material science, regulations, and large systemic factors. He highlighted that the performance of paper is determined by several complex elements such as stretchability, barrier properties, and economic constraints, and that nature offers important clues for designing better materials.

The second guest, Namma Nikotara (founder of NakedPack), is developing seaweed-based edible packaging that questions the very need for packaging itself. She also discussed the challenges involved in laboratory development, food safety, consumer behavior, certification, and scaling a zero-waste product.

Together, these two conversations illustrate the full spectrum of thinking around sustainable packaging—on one side, improving the performance of materials we already use, and on the other, questioning whether packaging needs to exist at all. One approach works within the limits of materials, while the other attempts to break those limits. Both point toward the same future: sustainability will only be possible when science, design, and human behavior come together.
